Strawberry Huswif is a study in dimensional wool appliqué, embroidery embellishment and wallet construction. This trifold sewing tool keeper is based on an historic sewing kit developed during the civil war to equip soldiers to repair their uniforms. The sculptable medium of wool and the design of this sewing kit make it a fun and forgiving medium for beginners.
The wool appliqué design is dimensional and embellished with seed stitches and basic surface embroidery. The introductory video outlines the project and tips on the construction. Please watch this video before you begin.
This class will include techniques on dimensional appliqué, embroidery guides, appliqué placement guides, a variety of surface stitch combinations and tri-fold construction using the blanket stitch.
Students will learn appliqué methods including the tack stitch, my own needle slanting techniques and fabric layering methods for adding dimension to the work. Tools that make working in felted wool easy and fun will be made available. Familiarity with freeze paper method is recommended.
There are 3 online lessons, plus two full size placement guides and patterns that can be downloaded in PDF format. Pattern prints on 11 x 14 inch paper or use your printers "poster" option to print on two 8 1/2 x 11" pieces of paper and tape them together. Remember to use the pattern full size.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn wool appliqué with a fun little project!
